Bird Feeders

Bird feeders or bird tables are devices placed outdoors and serve as a supplemental source of food for the birds. There are many types of bird feeders around, the most common are the platform, hopper and tube bird feeders. There are also suet and specialized feeders. There are many available kinds and designs of manufactured bird feeders around. Any bird feeding novice or any enthusiast should know what qualities make a good bird feeder.

Quality bird feeders should be very stable and durable. They should be of good construction and should be made of high quality materials. Feeders should last a long time despite being placed outdoors and being exposed to all kinds of things like strong winds, rain, snow and other wild life creatures. A well made bird feeder should be able to withstand all these things for it to serve its purpose of providing the birds with food, especially in the winter months.

The ideal bird feeder should be able to hold the amount of seeds that is favorable to you and the birds feeding at your station. Feeders should be able to hold enough seeds to avoid constant refilling, especially in the cooler months. No one enjoys going out in the cold just to refill their bird feeders.

Good quality bird feeders should also be able to keep seeds dry in addition to being able to hold a large amount of seeds. The bird feed should be protected from the rain and strong winds. Any accumulation of liquid on your bird feeder will cause the seeds to spoil easily. This is dangerous for birds because spoiled seeds might cause them to become ill or die if ingested.

Quality bird feeders should have some sort of protection from other wild life creatures. Squirrels, raccoons, cats and even bears have been known to attack bird feeders in the hopes of getting to the bird feed inside. Well made bird feeders should have some sort of built in parts or additional accessories to prevent unwanted animals from gaining access to the food that you have prepared for the birds.

Ideal bird feeders should be able to feed a large number and assortment of birds. It would be a great waste if a bird feeder can accommodate only one bird. Well made bird feeders should be able to hold an assortment of bird feed. The kind of feeder you have should not limit the kind of bird feed you can use, unless you are using specialized bird feeders. Bird feeders with more perches and can hold different kinds of bird feed are not only friendlier to more birds, but will also ensure that you get to watch and learn about a larger number of bird species as well.

Bird feeders of good quality should be easy to clean, take apart and reassemble. Remember, bird feeders require a lot of maintenance and need to be cleaned regularly. Cleaning your bird feeders should not become a hassle for you.

An even better bird feeder would be one that can combine great form and function. Bird feeders of unique designs can be used both as a decorative piece for your yard and as a bird feeding station.

In addition to the above mentioned qualities, the ideal feeders should be constructed in a way that nothing hampers your view of the feeding birds. You should be able to enjoy the product of your efforts, which is simply being able to watch the birds in your back yard.
