Materials:
- 8” x 10” x 3” Cedar
- 1 1” x 20 x 3” Cedar
- 1 – 5” wide cedar shingle or 2 1” x 12” x 1” Cedar
- 1” x 2” dowel
- 8” x 7” window screen
- 1 1” x 4’ x 3” Cedar
- 1 5/8” #6 deck screws
Steps:
1. Cut out the back of the 8” x 10” cedar with a 30° peek for the roof.
2. Drill a hole (1 1”) located at the center, 4 1” up from the bottom.
3. Drill a hole (1”) located at the center, 1” below the larger hole.
4. Cut two sides with these measurements: 1 1” x 6”
5. Cut the front using these measurements: 1 1” x 8”
6. Cut the two pieces for the roof with these measurements: 2 1” x 5 1”
7. Cut a piece for the post, 1 1” x 4’ with a point on one tip.
8. Cut the screen to this measurement: 8” x 7”
9. Drill two holes in the back, to mount the sides. Remember to countersink.
10. Glue the two sides to the back. Screw in place.
11. Glue the front piece to the two sides. Nail into place.
12. Attach the screen to the bottom using staples. Cut any excess screen off.
13. Cut the dowel into 2” pieces and glue into the hole (1”).
14. Glue the two roof pieces on. Use nails to secure into place.
15. Attach the stake onto the backside of the feeder. Nail into place.
Here is another free plan to build your own upside down suet bird feeder.
Materials:
- 1” thick sheet plywood
- Nails
- Eye screw
- Chain or rope
- Staple gun with staples
- Wire suet feeder (large opening)
Steps:
1. Take down the measurement of the largest side of your suet feeder. The feeder should fit into the box that you will be making.
2. Cut out a square of plywood, slightly larger than the largest section of the suet feeder. (For this project a 6” x 6” square was cut out to accommodate a suet feeder that was slightly less than 6” on the largest part.)
3. Cut out 4 (2” x 6 1”) sides.
4. Form the 4 sides onto a square by nailing each side, working in such a way that only one section overlaps every time. You could also pre-drill the holes before nailing to make your job easier.
5. Put in the top into the center of the square that you made using the sides. Nail the four sides to the top section.
6. Insert the suet feeder into the box that you built. Make sure that the door is located at the top.
7. Keeping the suet door open, staple the feeder into the plywood from inside the feeder. Close the door of the feeder.
8. Turn over your suet feeder so the wire mesh is located at the bottom. Attach the eye screw onto the center of the plywood top.
9. Thread the rope or chain onto the eye screw.
10. Fill the feeder with suet.
11. Hang your feeder.
Making a suet feeder from a log
Materials:
- log, 18” in length, 3” – 8” in diameter.
- Drill
- Dowels (optional)
- Eye bolt
- Rope or chain
Steps:
1. Drill holes onto the log that are 1” to 1 1” in diameter, from one side through the other. Fill with suet.
2. If you want to have perches available for your birds, drill small holes just below the larger holes you made and insert dowels into these holes. Use wood glue to secure the dowels.
3. Screw in the eye bolt onto one tip of the log.
4. Use your rope or chain to hang.
These are just a few ways for you to make your own bird feeder. Try one of these projects and enjoy yourself!
