Bird Feeders

Bird feeders are rather versatile; they can feed different species of birds with different kinds of bird feed, can either be mounted on poles or suspended using hangers, or can be used as decorative elements for your backyard.

The different kinds of bird feeders require different kinds of mounting options. Ground bird feeders are placed on or near the ground. Platform and hopper bird feeders are be mounted on poles. Tube feeders and suet feeders can be hung or suspended from tree branches or by the use of hooks and hangers. There are a number of ways to set up your feeding station, but the most commonly used mounting structure are the poles and the hangers.

There are different kinds of poles for different kinds of feeders. There are poles that are made for tube feeders. This type of pole usually comes with hooks for easier hanging. There are also poles for suet feeders, with clamps to secure the feeder onto the pole. Poles for tray bird feeders are also available, with clamps built in to secure the platform onto the mounting pole. However, there are also poles available that can accommodate different kinds of bird feeders. Also known as the "universal" poles, these are the rather versatile poles, with a host of different accessories to fit the different kinds of feeders available.

Poles also come with different built in protection and add-ons for your bird feeder. Some poles come with covers or rain guards, these basically prevent the rain from coming into contact with the seeds and helps keep the seeds dry. Other poles available have seed trays built in. These trays are used to catch the seeds that fall from the feeders and prevent waste. There are also poles that have built in squirrel guards, to keep the squirrels and other animals away from the bird seeds in your feeder. And some poles will even come with both seed trays and squirrel guards. There are a lot of variations on these add-ons. Deciding on what pole to get depends on what you need and what you can afford.

Poles are usually sold in pole systems and kits. These packages come with the pole usually divided into sections, with hole mounts, adapters, hanging hooks that can safely hold most small and medium bird feeders, and are usually adjustable to fit any type of bird feeder with any kind of mounting capability.

Using a hanger is another way to mount your bird feeders. These are hooks used to suspend feeders from tree branches or any other structure. These come in different kinds and designs. Some hangers can hold multiple feeders at one time, like the carousel bird feeder hanger, which can be suspended from one branch and can hold up to four feeders at once. Wall mounted hangers or wall brackets are also available.

Decorative poles and hangers are also produced by manufacturers and can be used as artwork and sculptures for your garden. Poles and hangers are designed to stand all kinds of weather conditions and come in different finishes. These are either galvanized, powder coated, zinc coated, wrought iron, or rust proof.

Some can be stuck directly into the ground; others can be attached to a wall or a flat surface that stands perpendicular to the ground. This is usually for hanging feeders.

Mounting hangers and poles should be done on rigid and permanents locations. Digging holes into the earth is required when mounting poles on the ground. Wall based poles and hangers also require a secure mount and should be attached to a flat, stable surface.
